Enjoy Summers With Mangoes - 10 Popular Mango Varieties to Try in 2024

India's most celebrated fruit, a.k.a. Aam, is back to add to your food euphoria. Know its varieties and how the tropical delight forms a part of everyone's meal.

One of the most awaited seasons of the year, known for its sunny days, calm weather and of course delicious ice cream is summer. One thing you cannot miss about summer is the arrival of the undisputed king of fruits that makes the season extra special!

Mango is very super special in India, and everybody loves mangoes. Do you know there are nearly 1500+ kinds of mangoes only in India? From the sweet Alphonso to the tangy Totapuri, Indian mangoes come in lots of delicious flavors and textures—just the right breed for mango lovers. Here are some of the most popular categories of mangoes in India!

You can shop for authentic Indian mangoes in USA, procured straight from Indian farms and supplied directly to your doors! It's the season for mangoes, and you can be sure to find the sweetest variety of Indian Aam with us!

  • Alphonso: Also known as the King of fruits, Alphonso mangoes are prized for their buttery smooth silky texture and a perfect blend of sweet and sour tastes. It is grown mainly in Maharashtra, while also found in Gujarat, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh. Being one of the most popular and loved mango varieties, the Alphonsos are exported to major parts of the world.

  • Safeda/Banganapalli: The Safeda or Banganapalli mangoes that herald the mango season, are available for the consumers in the market from April to June. This variety of mangoes originates in Andhra Pradesh, is very yellow in color, and slightly sour in taste. They bear fiberless pulp of a unique quality: totally fiberless meat renders absolute satisfaction to the tongue in every bite.

  • Kesar: If that aromatic air in your kitchen is sweet, it is probably from a king of Indian mangoes, Kesar. Grown in and around Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Kesar is very much in demand to make aamras because of its distinct smell and saffron pulp.

  • Pairi: These mangos are at different ripening times, usually around May and June, and complement the taste of Safeda mangos. The mangos are reddish, and the pulp of the mangoes exhibits a sweet and tangy flavor likened to honey—pure and full, with a very refreshing sour taste. In Gujarat, when aam ras is being prepared and Kesar mangoes are not still ripened, Pairi mangoes are used.

  • Langra: Langra mangoes are self-explanatory; with an ash-green skin and fiber-loaded flesh, one takes to a very different taste and experience. They proffer a unique sweet-tangy flavor, detailed like a tropical explosion in the mouth. The flesh is really juicy and somewhat fibrous in texture, thereby making it more of a pleasant experience.

  • Neelam: This variety of mango is special for its distinct aroma and is available throughout the year. But in June, during the monsoon showers, the real taste comes out of these fruits. The small mangoes are colored orange and are very famous in Hyderabad because of the difference in smell and flavor from the other varieties.

  • Dussehri: As sweet as candy, Dussehri has easily won the hearts and minds of children. Originating from the Nawab of Lucknow's gardens in the 18th century, it's a revered part of the Uttar Pradesh culinary heritage.

  • Himsagar: For Bengalis, Himsagar mangoes are very dear because their fiberless, fleshy yellow color is just perfect for sating the sweet tooth. Though its season may be only four weeks in May, it is savored in many ways, one of them being through milkshakes.

  • Totapuri: These can be readily identified by their characteristic beak-like parrot shape. These mangoes are much less sweet than other types, therefore very well suited for salads, or else when combined with salt and chilies, they give a tangy taste.

  • Chausa: Overflowed in the markets through July and August, the Chausa mangos from North India and Bihar are blessed with extraordinarily sweet flesh and bright yellow skin. It brings the sweet, fleshy end to mango season.

Best Mango Dishes To Try This Summer

  1. Dairy-Free Mango Ice Cream

Ingredients: Fresh and ripe mangoes, coconut cream, thick coconut, milk sugar, and honey.

Mix together coconut cream, thick coconut milk, honey, and sugar in a saucepan over very gentle heat. Bring it to boil and then let it simmer for a few minutes longer. Remove the saucepan from the heat source; keep it warm, and blend in smooth fresh ripe mangoes to form a paste. Transfer the paste to a container, cover it, and refrigerate for about 8 hours. Then churn it in an ice cream churning machine until it becomes soft and creamy. Finally, pour the mixture that is churned into a tray pre-chilled, cover it with foil or plastic wrap, and freeze. Serve it by dicing mango pieces over top and enjoy your refreshing treat.

  1. Mango Orange Liqueur Cheesecake with Sugar Ball

Ingredients: Sweet biscuit crumbs, butter, cocoa, cream cheese, caster sugar, orange juice, Cointreau Liqueur, gelatine, orange rind, whipped cream, fresh diced mangoes, gold gelatin leaves, sugar ball.

It is a decadent cheesecake that starts with a sweet biscuit crust made of good-quality biscuit crumbs, melted butter, and cocoa, pressed into a springform pan and chilled. Cream cheese is creamed with caster sugar, orange juice, Cointreau liqueur, and dissolved gelatine in boiling water. Now fold in the grated rind of an orange and lightly whipped cream. Add diced mangoes and then set the cheesecake with gelatine and freeze. Garnish with a sugar ball.

  1. Coconut Mango Oatmeal

Ingredients: Rolled oats, unsweetened almond milk, mango, shredded coconut, honey.

For a healthy dose of tropical breakfast, begin the process by warming up unsweetened almond milk, adding rolled oats to it, and letting it cook. Mix in diced mangoes and shredded coconut. Sweeten the mixture with honey. Once the oats are cooked accordingly, serve it warm topped with extra pieces of mango for freshness and added sweetness.

  1. Mango Dessert Glass

Ingredients: Milk cut, cream cut, honey, cinnamon powder, mango diced, mint sprig.

Reduce milk cut and cream cut in a saucepan till thick. Add the flavor of honey and powdered cinnamon. Take it off the flame and fold it in mango diced. Pour it among glasses and freeze. On freezing, serve the mixture garnished with the mint sprig for this scrumptious treat, also pleasing to the eye.

  1. Mango Smoothie

Ingredients: Yogurt, Alphonso mango, Milk, Honey, Mango ice cream

Nothing brings out the delightful pleasures of this drink. Whisk together the goodness of yogurt, milk, ripe Alphonso mangoes, honey, and a big scoop of mango ice cream to a luscious, creamy blend. Chill and serve either in glasses for a slurping, refreshing, and rejuvenating drink or in bowls as dessert to soothingly secrete calm over a very hot summer day.

  1. Mango Bircher Muesli

Ingredients: Oats, diced mango, reduced-fat natural yogurt, skimmed milk, honey, Alphonso mango pulp, raisins, apricot pear.

To make this really healthy and filling breakfast, in a bowl, combine oats, diced mangoes, yogurt, milk, honey, mango pulp, raisins, and apricots. Let the mixture sit overnight so the oats soften and the flavors incorporate well together. Just before serving, mix and top with fresh mango pieces to make it sweeter and richer. Serve the bircher muesli chilled to make a refreshing start to your day.
