  • The spirit of Janmashtami is addressed well by following specific do’s and avoiding certain don'ts to bestow the bounties of the festival at home and to invite fortune.

Significance of Krishna Janmashtami

Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the birthday of Lord Krishna, who is considered an incarnation or avatar of Lord Vishnu. The festival is a time for spiritual rejuvenation and rejoicing in the victory of good over evil. Fasting, singing bhajans, and reading scriptures are a few ways by which devotees soak themselves in spirituality to celebrate the arrival of the deity on earth.

Beyond a religious activity, it's a cultural function that binds people together in the community. People from all walks of life join in the revelry, comprising festivals with elaborate temple decorations, colorful processions, and acting-out scenes of Krishna's life.

On this day, India looks nothing short of a beautiful canvas painted in hues of love, faith, and devotion.

Date and Shubh Muhurat Timings

Krishna Janmashtami is observed on a date governed by the lunar calendar. Specific timings, called Shubh Muhurat, are observed during the festival.

These timings are pre-decided using the Hindu calendar and the Vastu Shastra, where several astrological factors are considered to get the most auspicious time for worship and celebration.

Puja Vidhi: Rituals, Chappan Bhog, & Panchamrit

  1. Puja Vidhi: Rituals

  • Gather Essentials: Ensure that all the puja-related items are ready before the day of puja. The items include a swing for Bal Gopal, red cloth, pooja chowki, framed picture of Lord Krishna, Chappan bhog (detailed below), panchamrit (detailed below), asana, Ganga jal, ghee-lamp, incense sticks, chandan (sandalwood paste), raw rice, tulsi leaves, prasadam, dresses for the idol, and a garland of flowers.

  • Morning Ritual: Wake up early, bathe the Krishna idol with pious Ganga jal or clean water, and adorn the idol with a new dress and jewelry.

  • Food Offerings: Offer fruits, milk, cucumber, and other sweets to Lord Krishna. Ensure that all the offerings to him are placed in a clean bowl on a white cloth.

  • Achaman Puja: It is done by chanting mantras while dripping Ganga jal on the hands and then sipping it. Repeat with different mantras and then dry the hands.

  • Post Bath Pooja: Bathe the idol with milk, ghee, and flowers. Apply sandalwood paste on the idol. Chant mantras and perform aarti, then use kumkum for blessings. Leave offerings for Krishna or immerse them in water before distributing prasadam. "Hare Krishna, Hare Rama..." is to be read at the end of the puja.

  1. Chappan Bhog

Chappan Bhog for Lord Krishna is a collection of 56 Prasad items served to him on Janmashtami. This bhog is made with love for the Lord and contains 56 dishes, including all of Lord Krishna's favorites. This bhog begins with pure and organic milk products that pay homage to Lord Krishna's childhood, followed by savory dishes that highlight culinary diversity, and ends with Krishna's favorite dishes.

Chappan Bhog contains a variety of sweet and savory items. The traditional items are mainly sweets like Laddu, Barfi, and Halwa and salty items like Kachori and Dahi Vada. Other items include Makhan and Mishri. Every single dish is prepared with care and regard for purity and sanctity; important for an offering to the divine.

  1. Panchamrit

Panchamrit is a sacred mixture prepared by Indians and is considered a divine food offering during Janmashtami. It is regarded as Lord Krishna's favorite, and its preparation in itself is a kind of ritual.
